About General Markets
General market is the catch-all: multiple stallholders in one hall or precinct selling a mix of fresh food, homewares, clothing, plants and whatever else, closer to a bazaar than a single-purpose food hall. It is the largest category here and easily the most varied. A permanent inner-city market trading five days a week and a monthly main-street community market both sit under it.
Sunday is the dominant day, though the biggest permanent markets open several days a week and treat the weekend as their busy period rather than their only one. If what you actually want is a weekly shop rather than a browse, the produce and fresh food category is usually the better starting point.
The largest examples in this category are genuinely large. Paddy's Markets Flemington trades inside the 42-hectare Sydney Markets complex and is Sydney's biggest weekend market by land area, while Queen Victoria Market has held National Heritage listing since 1878 and still runs around 600 traders across two city blocks. Fairfield Markets fills up to 600 undercover stalls every Saturday, and Laverton, which started as a 1974 flea sale called the Rubble & Riches Market, has grown into a 14-hectare bazaar with more than 1,400 vendors. Coburg Market sits at the smaller, more focused end of the same category, a permanent produce hall on Sydney Road that opens at 6am seven days a week.
General markets are also where a lot of Australia's migrant food cultures show up most directly. Global Food Markets in Logan grew from five migrant farmers selling backyard produce into a 100-stall reflection of the area's standing as one of the country's most diverse local government areas, and Footscray Market and Dandenong Market in Melbourne both trace their present-day character to specific waves of migration decades after they first opened as produce halls.
Perth runs its own version of the same big-shed format. Wanneroo Markets has been a northern suburbs institution since 1980, built around fresh local produce across more than 180 stalls, and Malaga Markets, founded in 1994 on an 18,000-square-metre industrial site, pairs an international food and shopping precinct with a licensed bar and weekend live entertainment, closer to an evening out than a weekly shop. Springvale Market Square in Melbourne trades daily rather than weekly, an Asian produce market that grew alongside the city's largest Vietnamese community and never really stops.
