Paddy's Markets Haymarket

Paddy's Markets is arguably Sydney's oldest surviving market tradition. The site traces back to 1834, when Governor Bourke moved hay and grain traders next to the cattle market on Campbell Street and let them stay open until 10pm on Saturdays. That late-Saturday habit is, more or less, the origin of the whole Paddy's Markets identity, and the Haymarket site inherited it directly.

A produce trade turned into a bazaar

What's actually there now is a fairly unfiltered mix. One side of the floor is still doing what the market has always done: fresh fruit, vegetables, seafood, the produce trade the site was built for. The other side has become a genuine bazaar of imported fashion, kids' clothes, hair accessories, phone cases, boomerangs, and enough gadgets and souvenirs to fill a suitcase. It sits right on the edge of Chinatown, with light rail access, so it tends to pull in both grocery-run locals and tourists hunting for cheap gifts at the same time.

Worth knowing before you go: it leans hard into budget goods, and some of that is exactly what you'd expect from a market like this. Knockoff phone accessories and fashion that's closer to a market stall than a boutique. If you're after something specific and high-quality, this isn't that stop. If you want a genuinely eclectic wander and don't mind sorting the good stalls from the filler, it delivers.

Good to know before you go

It trades Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Monday, Tuesday and Friday are dead. Go on a Saturday if you want the full, nearly two-century-old version of the ritual; a weekday visit is quieter and better if produce shopping is the actual goal.
