Healesville Community Market

Two Sundays a month in Healesville, and two different parks: a hundred stalls on the first, a smaller shaded one on the third.

Also known as Healesville Market.

About this market

Healesville runs its community market twice a month, and the two dates are different enough that regulars pick one. The first Sunday is the big one, filling the River Street car park behind the main street shops with something like 105 stalls. The third is the smaller, shadier version at Coronation Park, forty-odd stalls under tall trees.

Two Sundays, two characters

The first Sunday is the full spread: crafts, homemade jams and sauces, bric-a-brac, clothing, jewellery, plants, books, toys, tools, olive oil, eggs and fresh produce, with the local scouts running sausages and cold drinks. The third Sunday narrows to homemade products, soaps and honey, jam, crafts, plants, recycled books, DVDs and CDs, children's costumes, a sausage sizzle, a coffee van and produce. Both support local clubs and charities, which is the point of the thing.

Being in the Yarra Valley does the rest. Healesville is an hour or so from Melbourne and a market Sunday is a reasonable excuse for the drive, with the sanctuary and the wineries close enough to fill the afternoon.

Two parks, one name

The first Sunday and the third Sunday are not in the same place. First Sunday is the River Street car park, tucked behind the main street shops. Third Sunday is Coronation Park, further along River Street. Both are signposted on the day, but if you are following a map pin from an old listing you can easily end up at the empty one.

Good to know before you go

Check which Sunday you are coming for, because the two markets are genuinely different sizes and you may care. Nine to two is a comfortable window either way, and the first hour is the calm one. Bring cash for the smaller stalls and a bag for the produce. Healesville's main street is a few steps from both sites, so coffee is never a problem, and the drive up through the Yarra Valley is half the reason to make a morning of it.
