Markets in Victoria

Queen Victoria Market has traded on the same seven hectares of central Melbourne since 1878, and was added to the National Heritage List in 2018. It is the obvious starting point, but it is nowhere near the whole story.

Melbourne's inner suburbs run a string of permanent halls open several days a week: Preston, South Melbourne, Footscray, Prahran, Dandenong. These are working food markets first, where people do an actual weekly shop, and browsing destinations second. Past the suburbs, Victoria has the deepest farmers market scene in the country, concentrated through the goldfields and spa country around Daylesford, Castlemaine and Ballarat, where a monthly market is often the main trading event of the month.

Weekend coverage is unusually even here. Where most states tip heavily towards one day, Victoria splits close to evenly between Saturday and Sunday, so a weekend generally offers a real choice rather than one obvious option.
