Markets in Melbourne

Melbourne has more markets per head than anywhere else in Australia, and they split into three fairly distinct kinds. The big permanent halls trade most days of the week and function as grocery shopping rather than as an outing. The Saturday farmers markets are producer-only and scattered through the inner suburbs. Then there are the monthly community and trash and treasure markets, which are the ones people most often turn up to on the wrong weekend.

Working out which is which

The listings below carry the real trading pattern rather than a general "weekends" label, because in Melbourne that distinction does most of the work. A market running on the second Sunday is closed on the other three, and the outer suburban markets skew heavily monthly.
