Prahran Market

Prahran Market's history stretches back to 1864, when Prahran Council established a central marketplace to serve the small farmers and market gardeners multiplying across the district after the 1850s gold rush. Trading was underway on the original Greville and Grattan Street site by 1867, and by 1881 that site had become so overcrowded the market moved to its present location on Commercial Road, with the purpose-built market opening in 1891.

A market that survived fire and rebuilt itself twice

Growth kept forcing change. A 1923 extension added 48 stalls at a cost of £80,000, and a gleaming white-tiled meat hall opened in 1928. Then, on Boxing Day 1950, fire tore through the market and destroyed the entire fruit and vegetable section. Full redevelopment wasn't finished until 1976, a $6.5 million project that rebuilt the market largely as it stands today. Through it all, Prahran Market has never stopped trading, making it Australia's longest continuously serving market.

One trader's story sums up the market's long institutional memory better than any building: Bill Bracher worked at Prahran Market for more than 50 years, and in 2000 the meat hall was formally renamed the Bracher Arcade in his honour, a rare case of a market naming part of itself after a single long-serving stallholder rather than a founder or benefactor.

It's closed Monday and Wednesday, so plan around the Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday trading days. An independent board has managed the market since 1994, and its gourmet specialty stalls have made it a genuine destination for cooks rather than just a weekly grocery run.
