Kingston Farmers' Market

The Kingston Farmers' Market has been trading since October 2004, but the address on this page is only a few years old. On 4 February 2023 the market moved from Sir William Fry Reserve in Highett to Kingston Heath Reserve in Cheltenham, because construction on the Suburban Rail Loop East was about to begin on its old site. It now runs the first Saturday of every month except January, 8am to 12.30pm, at 285 Centre Dandenong Road opposite the DFO.

What a two dollar gate buys

Entry is a $2 donation to the Rotary Club of Chelsea, which co-runs the market with the City of Kingston. The gate money goes to the club rather than to a market operator, and the club is present on the day rather than being a name in the fine print. Inside, the stalls are farm-origin food. Organic fruit and vegetables, artisan cheeses and olive oils, specialty breads, free-range chicken and eggs, lamb, beef, veal and pork, confectionery, baked goods, preserves, and herb and vegetable seedlings. The Rotary club puts the crowd at around 2,000 people across a Saturday morning, on a reserve with free off-street parking for hundreds of cars, toilets and a playground. Dogs are welcome on a leash.

The relocation is the part of this market's story that will not appear on any stall sign.

Good to know before you go

First Saturday, 8am to 12.30pm, and no market at all in January. Bring a couple of gold coins for the gate as well as money for the stalls, because the $2 is per visitor rather than per car. Parking is free and off the street, which is worth something on Centre Dandenong Road, and the reserve has toilets and a playground if you are bringing children. The DFO is directly opposite if you want to make a morning of it. Dogs on leads are fine. This is Bunurong country.
