Markets in Western Australia

Fremantle Markets trade in a purpose-built hall whose foundation stone was laid in 1897. The building closed for years, reopened in 1975 after restoration, and went onto the state Register of Heritage Places in 1993. It still runs Friday through Sunday, which makes it the anchor for the whole state.

More distinctive is the mix. Western Australia leans harder towards genuine producer-led farmers markets than most of the country, and they follow the food-growing regions rather than the suburbs: Margaret River, Busselton, the Swan Valley around Herne Hill, and Bunbury, where the farmers market has become a destination in its own right.

Perth's suburban markets are a separate category again. Canning Vale, Wanneroo, Malaga and Gosnells are large weekend general markets in industrial-scale sheds, closer to a covered bazaar than a produce hall, and most of them favour Sunday over Saturday.

Margaret River Farmers Market, running since 2002 under the region's own producers association, was named Australia's most outstanding farmers market in 2018, and Bunbury Farmers Market has built a similar reputation since 2003 around 150-plus local growers, now backed by Gina Rinehart's Hancock Prospecting. Fremantle's other distinctive venue is E Shed Markets, the state's only waterfront market, trading inside a 1929 timber wharf shed that was physically rotated 180 degrees and moved in 1995.

Community fundraising runs deep through Perth's market scene. Kalamunda Artisan Market has generated more than $2 million for the local community since 2000, and Melville Rotary Markets has raised around $80,000 a year for community projects every Sunday since 1984. Perth also has a growing handmade-only strand, led by Perth Makers Market, founded in 2016 and now the city's largest exclusively handmade market, and a seasonal night-market habit that shows up as Twilight Hawkers Market in Forrest Place and Scarborough Sunset Markets on the beachfront, both running only through the warmer months.

South of Perth, the pattern thins into a string of small, once- or twice-monthly markets rather than a second cluster the size of the capital's. Albany, the site of Western Australia's first European settlement in 1827, has run a Saturday farmers market since 2002 in its historic CBD, and further into the South West, Bridgetown, Nannup and Donnybrook each run a fortnightly or monthly market built around a single park, oval or church ground rather than a purpose-built venue. Coverage gets sparser again past Bunbury and Albany, which mostly reflects how much of Western Australia's population sits in the Perth metropolitan area rather than a gap in what has been listed.
