Markets in Western Australia

Fremantle Markets trade in a purpose-built hall whose foundation stone was laid in 1897. The building closed for years, reopened in 1975 after restoration, and went onto the state Register of Heritage Places in 1993. It still runs Friday through Sunday, which makes it the anchor for the whole state.

More distinctive is the mix. Western Australia leans harder towards genuine producer-led farmers markets than most of the country, and they follow the food-growing regions rather than the suburbs: Margaret River, Busselton, the Swan Valley around Herne Hill, and Bunbury, where the farmers market has become a destination in its own right.

Perth's suburban markets are a separate category again. Canning Vale, Wanneroo, Malaga and Gosnells are large weekend general markets in industrial-scale sheds, closer to a covered bazaar than a produce hall, and most of them favour Sunday over Saturday.
