Summer X Salt Markets

Summer X Salt was Australia's first single-use plastic free and zero waste market, and it has now completed ten seasons on the grass at Clarko Reserve, on the dune above Trigg Beach. It trades the first and third Saturday of the month from 8am to 1pm across a summer season, with the 2025/26 run going from 18 October to 21 March. Founders Sophie and Mei Wan built it around handpicked local makers rather than an open stallholder list.

Ten seasons of no single-use plastic

The zero waste commitment is structural rather than decorative. Stallholders are chosen partly on how they package and serve, the market runs its own waste management system on the day, and carbon offsetting sits alongside it. Over 10,000 visitors come through in a season, which is a meaningful number of coffee cups and takeaway containers not going to landfill. The trader mix is local makers, designers and small food businesses, with live music playing across the reserve.

The other thing that makes this market unusual is what it programs alongside shopping. Free community wellness sessions run at each market: yoga and meditation on the grass, beach clean-ups on the sand below, and ice baths for anyone who fancies it. That turns a five-hour trading window into something closer to a Saturday morning on the coast that happens to have stalls attached.

Good to know before you go

Entry is free and the market sits right on West Coast Drive, so parking fills fast on a warm Saturday and the earlier arrivals get the closer bays. Bring your own bag and a keep cup, both because the market is built that way and because it makes the queue faster. The reserve is exposed, so a hat is worth more than a jacket here. Applications for the following season open in July, which is the window for makers hoping to trade.
