Platform Markets

Platform Markets trades every Sunday morning on the old boarding platform of Geraldton's original railway station, which opened on 26 July 1879 as the first government railway station in Western Australia. The station was rebuilt twice, in 1900 and 1911, and no longer runs trains, but its platform now hosts what locals describe as Geraldton's biggest and busiest weekly market.

A market on a 19th-century railway platform

Trading on an actual heritage platform gives Platform Markets a setting that's hard to replicate: stalls line up where boarding passengers once queued, with the old station buildings forming a backdrop rather than a purpose-built market shed. The range covers fresh local produce alongside homemade cheeses, breads, candies and jams, plus crafts, making it as much a food market as a maker's market.

The station was rebuilt a second time in 1911 after the original 1900 rebuild, with the earlier building repurposed as the District Engineer's Office, a reminder of how much rail traffic once passed through Geraldton before the line's decline and the platform's second life as a market site.

Good to know before you go

The market wraps up at midday, so a mid-morning visit still gives a good spread of produce and baked goods to choose from before stalls start packing down. Chapman Road sits close to Geraldton's city centre, making it an easy add-on to a wider Sunday morning around town.
