Fringe Flavours Night Market

Queen Victoria Market opened on 20 March 1878, built on the site of Melbourne's first cemetery, and its historic sheds still host the city's biggest open-air trading floor. Fringe Flavours Night Market puts those same sheds to a very different use each spring: multicultural street food stalls and a lineup of circus, burlesque, cabaret and music performers curated by the Melbourne Fringe Festival, running through Wednesday evenings for the length of the festival season.

A 19th-century market floor turned over to a modern arts festival

The pairing works because it plays to what the market already has, scale and heritage architecture, and adds something QVM's daytime produce trading never offers: a full entertainment lineup. Performers move through the crowd between stalls rather than staying on a single stage, so browsing the food and shopping stalls and catching a Fringe act happen in the same lap of the sheds. It's a different footprint to QVM's winter equivalent, the Winter Night Market, which runs June to August with its own separate program.

Reviewers flag the crowds and queues at peak times, along with strong food truck and paella stalls, and the family-friendly early evening atmosphere before the entertainment programming takes over.
