Avenel Market

A country market on the green at Jubilee Park, second Sunday of the month, backing local makers and growers.

About this market

Jubilee Park is a stretch of green in the middle of Avenel, and on the second Sunday of the month it holds the town's market. Four hours, local makers and growers, and a bit of live music: this is the country market format at its most straightforward, in a town small enough that the market is genuinely the event of the day.

Makers, growers and musicians

The market's own billing puts makers, artisans, musicians and farmers in that order, and it holds up on the ground. This is a produce and handmade market rather than a bric-a-brac hunt, which suits the Goulburn Valley country around it.

Avenel sits just off the Hume, which makes it an easy detour rather than a committed drive. Plenty of people fold the market into a run further north to Euroa or Benalla.

Did you know?

Ned Kelly lived here from the age of eight and went to the Avenel Common School. At eleven he pulled seven-year-old Richard Shelton out of Hughes Creek, and the boy's family gave him a green silk sash for it. He was still wearing that sash under his armour at Glenrowan, nineteen years later. The creek and the 1859 stone bridge are both a short walk from the market.

Good to know before you go

Four hours goes quickly and a one o'clock finish is firm, so mid-morning is the time to arrive. Jubilee Park is in the middle of town with room to park nearby. Bring cash for the smaller stalls and a bag for produce. If you are heading up the Hume anyway, the timing works well as a mid-morning break, and Seymour and Euroa are both a short drive if you want to make more of the day.
