Meeniyan began as a station on the South Gippsland railway line in the 1890s, and the line ran until 1992, when the branch serving the Bass Strait oil fields at Barry Beach closed. Rather than leaving the corridor to go to scrub, the rails were lifted and the route became the Great Southern Rail Trail, which now runs 131 kilometres from Nyora through to Yarram and Port Albert. The town's name comes from the local Aboriginal language and is recorded as meaning moon behind the trees over the water, an image the town still uses as its logo.

Second Sunday, 9am to 2pm, year round. Whitelaw Street is the main street and the square is on it, so parking is on the street and the surrounding blocks. Bring bags and a mix of cash and card. South Gippsland weather comes off Bass Strait and can turn quickly in any season, so a jacket is sensible even in February. The rail trail passes through the town, which makes a market Sunday combine neatly with a ride, and Wilsons Promontory is about an hour further south. This is Bunurong and Gunaikurnai country.
