Kongwak Market

Kongwak's first farm selections date to 1883, and the town grew up around the Moyarra Butter Factory, which a local co-operative took over and renamed Kongwak Butter Factory in 1896. That co-op went on to run the town's general store and agricultural supplies business, eventually building the current structure in 1953. Today that same building houses Kongwak Market.

The butter factory itself didn't survive industry consolidation, eventually merging into the Korumburra operation and closing under later ownership, but the general store building found a second life. Kongwak Market now runs every Sunday, undercover across the old shed and store, which means it trades regardless of weather. Stalls cover vintage and retro homewares, secondhand clothing, records, art and jewellery alongside local produce, plants, books and live music.

Few Victorian markets trade inside a building with quite this specific a backstory: a butter co-op's agricultural depot repurposed into one of Gippsland's better-known weekend markets.

Good to know before you go

Being fully undercover means it's a solid wet-weather option when other outdoor markets in the region shut down. It's a small town on the Korumburra-Wonthaggi Road, so allow extra travel time if you're coming from Melbourne rather than the immediate Gippsland area.
