Pomonal Village Market

Pomonal is a village on the road between Ararat and Halls Gap, with the Grampians rising behind it, and on the last Sunday of the month its community hall fills with forty to fifty stalls. The scale is right for the place: big enough to be worth the detour, small enough that the volunteers running it know most of the stallholders.

Produce and crafts, in roughly equal measure

Locally grown vegetables and produce sit alongside arts and crafts, and then the categories that make a country market interesting rather than predictable: collectables, books, plants, leather goods, clothing. Four hours is the window and the hall and its surrounds are the whole footprint.

Twelve markets a year with no seasonal break is worth noting for a village market run by volunteers. December and January both go ahead, which is not the norm at this scale.

Good to know before you go

Pomonal is around three hours west of Melbourne, so unless you live in the Wimmera this is part of a Grampians trip rather than a day out on its own. The hall is directly on the Ararat to Halls Gap Road and easy to find. Bring cash: a volunteer-run village market is not the place to count on card readers. If you are staying at Halls Gap the drive is fifteen minutes, which makes a last-Sunday morning here an easy addition to a walking weekend.
