Barwon Heads Market

Barwon Heads changes size in summer, and its market changes with it. For most of the year this is a once-a-month affair at the community hall on the last Saturday. Come December, it switches to every Saturday and stays that way through January, which is exactly when the town has the population to justify it.

A village hall market, at village hall scale

Four hours at a community hall sets the tone: this is local makers and produce rather than a sprawling trash and treasure field, and it is walkable from anywhere in the village. That compactness is the appeal. You can do the market, the bakery and the river in a single morning without moving the car.

The summer switch is the thing worth planning around, in both directions. In January you can turn up on any Saturday and find it on. In August you have one chance a month and it is the last Saturday.

Good to know before you go

The village fills in summer and parking near the hall goes early, so on a January Saturday walk in from wherever you have left the car. Out of season it is straightforward. Four hours is a short window and a one o'clock finish comes round quickly, so late morning is the sweet spot rather than the afternoon. Bring cash for the smaller stalls. The Barwon River and Thirteenth Beach are both minutes away, which is why most people treat the market as the first item of a longer day rather than the whole plan.
