Chiltern Markets

Chiltern Markets runs just four times a year, on the first Sunday of March, June, September and December, from 9am to 1pm. The market's Facebook page lists its address as 30 Main Street, Chiltern, and describes it as bringing together locals, produce, arts and crafts, handmade items and fun.

Four seasonal markets on Main Street

Because there are only four dates a year, each market works like a small seasonal event in the town. Listings describe local artisan stalls to browse, a selection of food and coffee, activities for kids and local musicians performing. The operator posts updates as each market gets under way, including a note that the Chiltern Spring Market was up and running.

Chiltern is in the north-east of Victoria between Wangaratta and Wodonga, in the Shire of Indigo, and had a population of 1,580 at the 2021 census. The township was established after gold discoveries in 1858 and 1859, and its post office opened on 1 September 1859. Many of its buildings are classified by the National Trust, so a market day pairs well with a walk along the historic streetscape.

Chiltern was once on the main road between Melbourne and Sydney. It is now bypassed by the Hume Freeway, which runs one kilometre to the south,. The Grape Vine Hotel, on the corner of Main Street and Conness Street, boasts the largest grapevine in Australia, planted in 1867.
