Rye Foreshore Market
A Rotary market of more than 80 stalls on the Rye foreshore, run on a rule that most of what is sold has to be made or grown by the seller.
About this market
The Rye Foreshore Market has been running for more than twenty years, and it is organised around a rule rather than a theme. The Rotary Club of Rosebud-Rye calls it a "make, bake and grow" market, and the standard it applies is that roughly 70 percent of what a stall sells should be homemade or home-grown. That single condition is what shapes the other eighty-odd stalls.
The rule does the curating
A make, bake and grow rule is a blunt instrument, and it works. It keeps out the imported-stock stalls that fill the gaps at unmoderated markets, and it means the fresh produce, the preserves, the plants and the craft on the foreshore mostly come from people on the Mornington Peninsula. The market's own conditions spell out the exclusions too: no animals, no weapons, no prescription medications. Stall hire is modest, at $30 for a single site and $60 for a double, and the revenue funds the Rotary club's community service work rather than a promoter's margin.
Market at a glance
The market has moved. It used to set up near the Post Office and now runs on the foreshore opposite the Rye Hotel and the Rotary clock on Point Nepean Road, alongside new car parking built by the Mornington Peninsula Shire near the pier. If you have an old listing, check the location before you drive down.
The February market is held at a different spot again, on the playground site, and vehicles are not permitted there. The rest of the year runs on the main foreshore location opposite the hotel.
Good to know before you go
Stalls open to the public from 8.30am on the first Saturday, and traders are gone by 2pm; most published listings quote a close around 1pm, so treat the middle of the morning as the safe window. Parking is in the foreshore car parks near the pier and along Point Nepean Road, and it fills fast in summer when Rye's population multiplies. Bring cash as well as a card, and bring bags. The site is foreshore, so it is exposed to wind off the bay and worth a jacket even on a warm day. The beach, the pier and the Rye shops are all a short walk, which makes the market an easy first stop rather than the whole morning. This is Bunurong country.
