Timor Street Market

Timor Street Market is Warrnambool's largest permanent indoor market, with more than 40 independent stallholders sharing one building at 180 Timor Street and trading every day of the week from 10am to 5pm. It has also gone by the name Warrnambool Independent Traders Market, which describes the model exactly: each trader runs their own stall under a shared roof, rather than the building being one shop with departments.

Forty traders, two levels, seven days

The stock is what you would hope for from four dozen independent sellers rather than a buyer's plan. Vintage, retro, modern and handmade clothing for women, men, children and babies runs alongside accessories and jewellery, with roughly 200 square metres of clothing and accessories upstairs. Downstairs covers furniture, collectables, gifts, homewares, books, records, toys and games, bric-a-brac, and old farm and garage tools. Because the traders each restock their own space, the floor changes continuously, which is why regulars call in weekly rather than monthly.

The seven-day format is the unusual part. Most second-hand and vintage markets in regional Victoria run one weekend a month, which means planning a trip around a date. This one is open whenever the shops on Timor Street are, so it works as a rainy-afternoon option on a Great Ocean Road trip or a weekday browse for locals, and the prices stay closer to op-shop territory than to curated-vintage territory.

Good to know before you go

The ground floor has wide aisles throughout, so prams and wheelchairs get around comfortably, though the clothing area upstairs is a separate proposition. The rear entrance backs onto a large public car park with free parking, which is easier than finding a bay on Timor Street itself. Allow more time than you think, since 40 stalls of collectables and second-hand goods is not a ten-minute walk-through, and bring cash for the traders who prefer it.
