Golden Plains Farmers' Market

Golden Plains Shire Council started this market in 2009 and never handed it over, which makes it one of the few farmers markets in Victoria still run by the council that created it. In 2017 it took out the Tourism and Hospitality Award at the Geelong Business Excellence Awards, an unusual result for a monthly market in a town of a few thousand people.

First Saturday, ten months a year

The market runs 9am to 1pm on the first Saturday of the month, skipping January and December, which works out to ten market days a year. The stall mix leans towards things you take home and eat: seasonal fruit and vegetables, wines and spirits, artisan breads, spices, sauces, gourmet snacks, plus handmade gifts for people not shopping for their pantry. Live music, food stalls and coffee run through the morning, and the market sits on the Moorabool Valley Taste Trail, so it collects visitors doing the wineries and producers as well as locals doing the shopping.

Council management shows up in small ways. Stallholders apply through an online form and get an answer within a fortnight, existing traders book their spot market by market, and site allocation is only final once the official map has gone out by email. It is a more administered market than most, and the payoff is a consistent line-up rather than a different set of gaps every month.

Good to know before you go

The two months to watch are January and December, when there is no market at all, so a first-Saturday trip in either of those months is a wasted drive. Four hours from 9am makes this a proper morning outing rather than a quick stop, and Bannockburn is small enough that the market is the reason to be in town. Bring bags and a cool bag if wine or fresh produce is on the list.
