Cairns Esplanade Markets

The Cairns Esplanade Markets run under the council's own colourful tents on the promenade beside the Lagoon, every Saturday of the year, and the rule that shapes them is simple: only locally made arts and crafts and specialty clothing. Stalls are administered by the council's inner city facilities office rather than a private operator, and the effect is a market where you are usually buying from the person who made the thing.

What is on the tables

Jewellery, leather work, pottery, clothing, skincare and airbrush tattoos are the recurring categories, alongside whatever else Far North Queensland's makers are producing that season. Live musicians and street performers work the promenade through the day, which turns a straight line of tents into something you slow down for. Eight hours is a long trading day by market standards, so the crowd changes shape across it: early is locals and serious shoppers, the middle of the day belongs to visitors coming off the Esplanade walk, and the last stretch is quieter.

The setting is the reason the market is where it is. The Esplanade promenade runs along the edge of Trinity Inlet with a timber boardwalk suspended over the mudflats for birdwatching, public art and interpretive material woven through the landscaping, and the Lagoon at its centre. Very few markets in Australia come with a free saltwater swimming pool built into the venue.

Good to know before you go

Saturday only, 8am to 4pm, and there is no reason to rush: the long trading day means you can arrive after a swim and still see everything. Entry is free and so is the Lagoon, so bring swimmers, a hat and sunscreen, because the promenade offers less shade than the tents suggest. Cash is worth carrying for smaller makers even though most take cards. Parking along the Esplanade is limited on a Saturday, and the walk in from the city centre is short and flat, so leaving the car further back is usually the faster option. A few listings quote a 5pm finish rather than 4pm, so if you are aiming for the tail end of the day, check before you set out.
