Rusty's Markets

Started by a single farmer in 1975 with six stalls, now 180-plus stalls of tropical fruit most of Australia has never tried.

About this market

Rusty's Markets started in 1975 with six stalls and a farmer named Rusty Rees. Fifty years later it's grown to more than 180 stalls and become one of the best-known farmers markets in Tropical North Queensland, trading Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the heart of Cairns City.

Fruit most of Australia has never tried

The produce here is the actual point, not a side attraction: rambutan, mangosteen, lychee, jackfruit, longan, star fruit and durian sit next to more familiar tropical staples like pawpaw, pineapple, watermelon and passionfruit, alongside dozens of local mango and banana varieties. It's grown regionally and sold directly by the farmers who grew it, which is a real distinction from a market that just resells wholesale produce.

It draws a genuine mix of people rather than just tourists: reviewers describe it as a meeting place for locals across generations, and the multicultural stallholder base reflects Cairns itself, with Indigenous Australian, Asian, Pacific Islander and European traders all represented. Sugar cane juice and Vietnamese coffee come up often enough in reviews to count as house specialties.

Did you know?

Rusty's Markets grew from just six stalls in 1975 to more than 180 today, a thirty-fold increase built entirely on regional tropical produce rather than imported goods.

Good to know before you go

Trading starts early, so a morning visit gets first pick of the fresher tropical fruit before the day heats up. It's a working farmers market first and a tourist stop second, which is part of why the produce quality holds up so well in reviews.
