Penrith Showground Markets
Between 250 and 300 stalls every Wednesday at the Paceway showground, rain, hail or shine, and finished by half past one.
Also known as Penrith Paceway Markets, Penrith Wednesday Markets, Penrith Markets.
About this market
Three hundred stalls on a Wednesday is not a normal thing. Most large markets take a weekend because that is when people are free, but Penrith Showground has run its market midweek for years and draws the crowd anyway, which tells you something about what it sells and who buys it.
A general market in the oldest sense
This is not a curated artisan market and it does not pretend to be. Plants, fruit and vegetables, clothing, tools, craft supplies, auto parts, pet goods and several rows of bric-a-brac. The range is the point: at 250 to 300 stalls you can walk in without a list and leave with something you did not know was for sale. Prices reflect a market aimed at regulars rather than tourists.
Market at a glance
The market runs rain, hail or shine, which for an outdoor market of this size is a real commitment rather than marketing copy. Traders build their week around it and so do the buyers.
The showground sits behind Club Paceway, the harness racing track, which is why half the listings call this the Penrith Paceway Markets and the other half call it the Penrith Showground Market or simply the Penrith Wednesday Markets. All four names point to the same Wednesday morning at 141-147 Station Street.
Good to know before you go
Bring cash. A general market with hundreds of small traders is the one place where assuming a card reader will let you down. Come early: the produce and plant stalls do their business before eleven and a 1.30pm close means the last hour is packing up. Parking is on site and the showground is a short walk from Penrith station, which is unusual for a market this size. Bring your own bags and, if you are buying plants, something to carry a tray in.
