Magpie Up Style Market

The Magpie Up Style Market fills the grounds of Lawson Public School on the third Sunday of every month except January, running 9am to 2pm with over a hundred stalls. It draws an estimated three thousand people, which for a Blue Mountains village market is a substantial number and reflects how well the site works: the school sits on the Great Western Highway with the station in walking distance.

A hundred stalls, growers to second hand

The stall list spans a wide range: growers and artisans at one end, second-hand goods and collectibles at the other, with handmade crafts, woollen goods, preserves, books and jewellery in between. Food is properly covered too, with gozleme, yum cha and barbecue alongside coffee. That breadth is the point, and it is what lets a monthly market pull a crowd from across the mountains rather than just from Lawson itself. Entry is free and the market is family friendly and largely accessible, though some stalls sit on grass. The operator, All Events Markets and Festivals, runs two other Blue Mountains markets on other Sundays of the month, at Springwood and Blackheath.

The market is widely listed under the name of its town rather than its own, so directory sites often call it the Lawson markets. The operator uses only the Magpie name, and that is what the signage on the day says.

Practical notes

Third Sunday, 9am to 2pm, no market in January. Bring bags and a mix of cash and card, since a hundred-stall market always includes traders who take only one. The train is genuinely the easy option here, with Lawson station a short walk from the school, and street parking as the fallback. The Blue Mountains sit well above the coastal plain and a Sunday morning at Lawson can be considerably colder than Sydney, so dress for the altitude rather than the forecast you left home with.
