Bellingen Park is the kind of setting most markets would invent if they could: old-growth trees, a creek meandering through, and enough room for more than 200 stalls without any of it feeling packed. On the third Saturday of the month the whole park fills, and a town of a few thousand people hosts something considerably larger than itself.

Forty-odd years of the same third Saturday

The market has run since 1980, which shows in the range. Local produce and handmade crafts are the backbone, alongside clothing, alternative therapies, and a food line-up of gourmet hot and cold options that has grown well past the sausage sizzle stage. Live music plays through the day rather than for a token hour in the morning.

Profits go back to local groups and initiatives, which is the quiet reason a volunteer-run market lasts four decades. It also sets the tone: this is the town's market rather than a tourist attraction that happens to be in a town.

Good to know before you go

Six hours and 200 stalls is a genuine half day, so do not treat it as a quick stop on the drive between Coffs Harbour and Dorrigo. Parking fills early and Bellingen's streets are narrow, so arriving before nine or after midday is easier than the middle. Bring cash and bring bags. The park has shade in abundance, which makes this one of the more comfortable summer markets on the coast, and there is enough seating and food to make lunch there the plan rather than the fallback.
