The estate passed to pastoralist John Frederick McDougall in 1856, and historians still debate whether the suburb's name honours the poet John Milton or McDougall's own English birthplace of Greater Milton. Rail reached the area in 1875, with a dedicated Milton station opening in 1884, cementing the suburb's role as an inner-city hub well before the market ever arrived.
