Como sits on a bend of the Georges River with the rail bridge overhead, and the market at the public school takes advantage of every bit of that. Five hours on the second Sunday, on a site with grass, shade and a river view, which is more than most Sydney monthly markets can offer.

A general market that leans handmade

The range covers food and drink first, then handmade goods, artisan products, homewares, flowers and books. It is broad rather than specialised, and it is sized for a suburb rather than a region: you can walk the whole thing twice in an hour and still find something on the second pass. Activities for children run alongside, which is the practical difference between a market families visit and one they visit once.

Running on a school site means the market puts money back into the school, and it also means the facilities are better than a park market: toilets, hard surfaces, and somewhere to shelter if the weather turns.

Good to know before you go

Genoa Street is narrow and the school has limited parking, so most people park in the surrounding streets and walk, or take the train to Como station, which is close. Bring cash and a bag. January is the month off, so do not plan a summer holiday visit around it. If you are making a morning of it, the Como foreshore and the old Como Bridge walkway are a short stroll from the school, and the market finishing at two leaves plenty of afternoon.
