Marden Markets
A Saturday market in the car park of the Marden Sports Complex, home of a soccer club founded by Neapolitan migrants in 1958.
About this market
Marden Markets fills the car park of the Marden Sports Complex every Saturday from 8am to 1pm. The venue belongs to the Azzurri Sports Club, a soccer club founded in June 1958 as the Napoli Sports Club by members who had mostly come from the Campania region around Naples, and the market trades on its home ground.
A club car park with a long Italian-Australian history
The club changed names repeatedly through its early decades, becoming Eastern Districts, then Eastern Districts Napoli in 1962 and Eastern Districts Azzurri in 1966, before settling as the Adelaide Blue Eagles. It moved to the purpose-built Marden ground in 2000, officially opened on 19 February that year in front of a crowd of around 4,000 who watched a 4-0 win over Campbelltown. The Saturday market is now part of how that site earns its keep between fixtures.
Market at a glance
The stall mix is broad rather than specialised: independent traders selling fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables, artisan breads, pastries and desserts, coffee, therapeutic products, handmade goods and a healthy run of bric-a-brac. It reads as a neighbourhood market for the inner north-eastern suburbs rather than a destination food market.
The club that hosts the market was originally named Napoli Sports Club in 1958, and had to change its name because the local association would only allow one Italian-named club in the competition.
Good to know before you go
The market runs on the car park at 61 to 65 Lower Portrush Road, so it is easy to find but worth arriving early on a busy Saturday when parking has to share space with the stalls. The 1pm finish is later than most Adelaide Saturday markets, which makes it a workable option if an early start is not on the cards, though the produce stalls are naturally best picked over first thing.
