From Battunga to Meadows

Meadows is an Adelaide Hills town of 1,126 people at the 2021 census. It was originally called Battunga, meaning the place of big trees, and German Lutheran settlers were placed on the surrounding land in the late 1830s after Charles Flaxman acquired a special survey there. A sawmill was running by 1870, and in 1920 geologist and Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson founded South Australian Hardwoods and owned a 1,200 acre farm called Harewood near the town. By 1868 the township had an inn, two stores, a blacksmith, a butcher, a mill and two churches, St George's Anglican Church opened in 1870, and William Durward established the first commercial forest plantation in 1899. Charles Flaxman acquired the surrounding special survey on 21 January 1839, a mail service to Adelaide was running by 1842, and the district grew wheat, barley, oats and vegetables. A new school opened in 1910 and the Institute was built in 1914.

The stall list is broad. The market's page names jams, chutneys and sauces, fruit and vegetables, homemade foods and chocolate, antiques and collectables, crafts including felting and alpaca yarn, books, bric-a-brac, toys, plants, tools, candles and soaps. A cafe area with fresh coffee, scones and light lunches has plenty of seating.
