Fairfield Markets
Up to 600 undercover stalls at the Fairfield Showground every Saturday, and one of the biggest weekly markets in Sydney.
About this market
Six hundred stalls is not a figure most markets get near, and the Fairfield Showground has the room for it. This is a weekly general market at genuine scale, undercover, in the middle of Western Sydney, and it draws thousands of people on a Saturday for the straightforward reason that you can buy almost anything there.
A general market that means it
Clothes and groceries do the heavy lifting, alongside household items, toys, sporting gear and jewellery, with a substantial food and drink contingent running through it. There is no curation here and that is the appeal: the fun is in walking the length of it and finding the stall you did not know you needed.
Market at a glance
Undercover is the detail that separates this from most markets of its size. A wet Saturday closes half the outdoor markets in Sydney or empties them of stallholders. This one carries on.
The showground address is Prairiewood, not Fairfield, which catches people out. The market keeps the Fairfield name because that is the district, but the entrance is on Smithfield Road at Prairiewood, a couple of suburbs over from Fairfield station.
Good to know before you go
Give yourself longer than you think. Six hundred stalls is a two hour walk at a brisk pace and most people do not manage brisk. There is parking at the showground, and it fills, so earlier is better on both counts. Bring cash: at this scale plenty of stallholders take cards, but plenty still do not, and the prices are the sort where haggling is not out of place. Come hungry, because the food end of a market this size is a genuine reason to visit on its own.
