Suitcase Rummage began in Brisbane in 2010, started by two friends, Daniele and Isabel, who wanted a market that ordinary people could actually get into. The format has not changed since: pack a suitcase with pre-loved things or your own handmade work, lay a rug on the ground, and sell from there. No tables, no marquees, no clothing racks. It runs at Reddacliff Place at the top of Queen Street Mall on the first and third Sunday of the month, 12pm to 5pm.
The constraint is the whole idea
Most markets price out casual sellers through equipment and site fees before they sell anything. Suitcase Rummage flips that: a flat $30 site plus booking fees, insurance covered by the organisers, and a hard limit on how much you can physically bring. What grew out of that is a market of well over 150 sellers on a big day, most of them clearing wardrobes, record collections and craft benches rather than running a retail business. The organisers describe the ethos as no elitism, and the ground-level layout enforces it more effectively than any policy could.
