Petrie Sunday Markets

Old Petrie Town began as North Pine Country Park in 1974, a plan by the Pine Rivers Shire Council to relocate historic buildings onto one site and preserve them as a living heritage village. The market that now fills it on Sundays has its own separate history: the Closeburn Country Markets first opened in 1979, before relocating here with a grand opening on 7 June 1987, giving Petrie Sunday Markets a running history of nearly four decades on this site.

A market inside a village built from relocated history

That heritage village setting is what separates Petrie Sunday Markets from a standard car-park market. Shoppers wander among preserved historic buildings and museums across 48 acres of parkland, with stalls selling pottery, crafts, fresh produce and unique finds woven through the village rather than laid out in a single open field. The park itself took its current name, Old Petrie Town, in 2005, by which point the YMCA had taken over its lease and management.

Reviewers regularly mention the steam train and fire engine as unexpected highlights for kids, alongside the pottery and historical atmosphere that comes from browsing stalls set among genuinely old, relocated buildings rather than a purpose-built market shed.

The markets run rain, hail or shine, so a wet Sunday forecast isn't a reason to skip it. Ample parking is available on site, and with 48 acres of heritage buildings and museums to explore alongside the stalls, it's worth allowing more time than a typical market visit.
