Todd Mall Markets

A town crier declares the Todd Mall Markets open each Sunday, which tells you most of what you need to know about how seriously Alice Springs takes them. The market has traded for more than 20 years, running 9am to 1pm on Sundays from March through to December, and it is run by the people who stand behind the tables: the Todd Mall Market Committee is made up of stallholders and a market coordinator, and the whole thing operates not for profit.

What you find on a Sunday morning

Aboriginal art and craft are what most visitors come for, alongside handcrafted jewellery, clothing, wellbeing products, honey, hats, mats and books. Local produce and food vans fill out the middle of the market, and the alfresco setting means people eat where they stand rather than taking it away. The pedestrian mall, its arcades and plazas all get used, which spreads the crowd out more than a single-venue market would.

The January and February break is not a quirk, it is a concession to Central Australian summer. An outdoor market at midday in Alice Springs in January is not a workable proposition, so the season starts in March and the market instead makes the most of the cooler months when the town is also busiest with visitors.

Before you go

Check where the market is meeting before you set out. The move to the Council Lawns on Todd Street is temporary, tied to the mall reconstruction that began in earnest in early 2026, so the location may shift back once the work finishes.

Bring cash and a hat. Even outside the summer break, a Central Australian Sunday morning gets warm well before the 1pm finish, and shade at the temporary site is more limited than in the mall itself. If you are buying Aboriginal art, talk to the artist or their representative at the stall about where the work comes from: buying direct at a market like this is one of the more transparent ways to do it.
