Green Light Organic Market Willunga

A weekly Saturday market at Willunga Recreation Park built around a stated rule: organic, fair trade, local, recycled and ethically made.

About this market

The Green Light Organic Market runs every Saturday at Willunga Recreation Park, on the corner of Aldinga and Main Roads. What distinguishes it from the other markets on the Fleurieu is that it publishes a standard and holds stallholders to it: sustainable, organic, fair trade, local, recycled and recyclable, and ethically produced.

A market with entry criteria

Most markets describe what they sell. This one describes what qualifies, and the difference shows in the stall list, which centres on locally grown organic fruit and vegetables and extends into other high-quality sustainable products rather than into general craft and second-hand goods. Setting criteria narrows a market and that is the intention: a shopper arriving on a Saturday morning does not have to work out which stalls meet their standard, because the market has already done it. Willunga sits south of Adelaide in McLaren Vale country on the Fleurieu Peninsula, and the surrounding district grows a great deal of what is on the tables.

2Saturday markets in town

Willunga carries two Saturday morning markets at separate sites, and they are easily confused. This is the organic one at the Recreation Park, on the corner of Aldinga and Main Roads. The Willunga Farmers Market trades at the high school further along Main Road, and it is the older of the two by some margin.

Did you know?

Willunga supports two established Saturday morning markets a short walk from each other, and they run on the same morning without competing for the same sellers. One is the state's oldest farmers market, opened in February 2002 at the high school on Main Road. This one sets published admission criteria instead, so a stallholder who qualifies for one will not necessarily qualify for the other, and the town ends up with two Saturday markets serving different definitions of local.

Worth knowing before Saturday

Saturday morning, from 9am. Sources give slightly different closing times, so treat the morning as the reliable window and do not plan on a late arrival. Bring your own bags and containers, which is the expectation at a market with a recycling and packaging standard, and bring cash as well as a card. The Recreation Park is on the corner of Aldinga and Main Roads with parking around it. Doing both Willunga markets in one morning is entirely feasible and is what a lot of visitors come down for. This is Kaurna country.
