Gatton Markets

Gatton is the middle of the Lockyer Valley, a stretch of alluvial flats that grows a large share of south east Queensland's vegetables. A market held here has an advantage that most country markets have to work for: the produce did not travel. The Gatton Markets run at the showgrounds on the first Sunday of the month, 8am to 12pm, and they finish early enough to beat the heat.

Forty stalls and a four hour window

The stall count sits at 40 or more, spread across the showground with parking on site and free entry. What is on offer is what you would expect from a working agricultural town: fruit and vegetables, plants and seedlings, preserves and baked goods, craft and handmade gifts, tools, clothing and a substantial second-hand section. It is a general market rather than a farmers market, so the produce sits alongside everything else rather than defining the whole thing.

The noon finish is deliberate rather than lazy. Gatton records some of the hottest summer temperatures in south east Queensland, regularly running several degrees above Brisbane on the same day, and an outdoor market that trades into the afternoon in January would be unpleasant for stallholders and shoppers alike. Packing up at midday keeps the whole thing workable year round instead of collapsing into a winter-only market.

Good to know before you go

First Sunday, 8am to 12pm, entry free, and use the Yates Street gate rather than circling the showground looking for a way in. Get there before 10 if you want produce. Bring cash, a hat and your own bags, because the showground is open ground with limited shade and a good part of the market trades in the sun. Gatton is a little over an hour west of Brisbane on the Warrego Highway and 45 minutes from Toowoomba, which makes the first Sunday an easy morning run from either.
