1829Maitland laid out as a township

Maitland sits on the Hunter River, about 166 kilometres north of Sydney and 35 kilometres north-west of Newcastle. Governor Lachlan Macquarie visited in 1818 and named the area Wallis Plains, and it was laid out as a township and renamed Maitland in 1829. It was partitioned into West and East Maitland in 1835, the two merged in 1944, and High Street is the city centre. The 1955 Hunter Valley floods reached 12.5 metres and caused catastrophic damage and loss of life, with seven thousand buildings damaged and fourteen deaths recorded. The Maitland area covers 392 square kilometres and had 89,597 residents at the 2021 census. The event listing also carries an email contact for the organisers.

Good to know before you go

Check the date before you travel, because the market runs once a month and the listing covers set dates for 2026. The organisers also advise checking their social pages before any market for weather-related changes or cancellations.
