Wynyard Foreshore Market

Wynyard Foreshore Market trades on the first and third Sunday of the month, 8am to 2pm, on the strip of grass between the Old Bass Highway and East Wynyard Beach. The setting does a lot of the work: the market sits on the north west coast where the Inglis River meets Bass Strait, with Table Cape rising out of the water a few kilometres west.

Produce, preserves and a good rummage

The stall mix leans local and practical rather than boutique. Growers bring fresh produce straight off the farm, and alongside it you will find jams, cakes and preserves, potted plants and seedlings, handcrafted timber, books, and tables of second-hand bric-a-brac worth a proper rummage. Regulars rate the plant stalls and the produce in particular, and the whole thing runs at an unhurried pace that suits a Sunday morning. It is a general community market rather than an accredited farmers market, so growers, makers and people clearing out a shed all trade side by side, and the six-hour window means stallholders are not packing up at lunchtime.

The calendar is not fixed at two Sundays all year. Waratah-Wynyard Council lists extra market days in the run-up to Christmas, when it moves to weekly, and several twilight markets are held on Friday evenings over summer. If you are travelling through on a Sunday outside the first and third of the month, it is worth checking the market's Facebook page before you plan the detour.

Good to know before you go

There is on-site parking and public toilets, and the ground is flat and grassed. It is an exposed coastal site, so pack a jacket even on a bright morning, since the wind off Bass Strait is the one thing shoppers mention most often. Dogs are welcome by arrangement with the organisers rather than as a given. Get there closer to 8am than 2pm if you want the produce and the plants, both of which tend to thin out well before packing-up time.
