Oberon Markets

First-Saturday markets at Oberon Showground on the Central Tablelands, with local produce, alpaca knitwear, crafts, coffee and wine.

About this market

Oberon Markets are held on the first Saturday of the month at Oberon Showground on Ross Street. The market's Facebook page gives the hours as 9am to 1pm, and describes it as dog friendly with a range of indoor and outdoor stalls.

A Central Tablelands town with a cold-climate edge

Oberon is a Central Tablelands town of 3,319 people at the 2021 census, with farming, forestry and wood products as its main industries. It was permanently settled in 1839 as Bullocks Flat and renamed Oberon in 1863. Gold was found on the Fish River in 1823, and the town sits near Jenolan Caves and Kanangra-Boyd National Park. The Oberon Council was formed in 1906, and the town's heritage listings include the Malachi Gilmore Memorial Hall on Oberon Street. Mayfield Garden, a 16 hectare botanical garden nearby, is open daily except public holidays and charges an entry fee.

Listings describe a mix of local fruit and vegetables, knitwear, alpaca products, handmade crafts, artwork, freshly roasted coffee, wines and olives. Lake Oberon and The Reef Reserve, nearby, are known for fishing. Oberon is also the birthplace of Greens politician Bob Brown, and the Cold Chisel video for Flame Trees was filmed in the town. Rugby league coach Craig Bellamy began his playing career with the Oberon Tigers in the 1970s.

Good to know before you go

The market is on the first Saturday only, so a missed date means waiting a month. The Facebook page and the council's events page agree on 9am to 1pm. The Showground on Ross Street is one of the town's main parks and sports facilities, so the site is easy to find.

Jenolan Caves and Kanangra-Boyd National Park are both near the town, so the market fits into a longer Tablelands trip. Oberon usually receives snowfall in winter, so warm clothing is worth packing for the cooler months.

Did you know?

Oberon was called Bullocks Flat until it was renamed in 1863, and it usually sees snowfall in winter because of its high elevation.
