A second-Saturday country market in the grounds of the Wyee Community Hall, running from March each year, in a Lake Macquarie village named when the railway arrived in 1887.
About this market
Wyee was called Norahville until 1887, when the Main Northern railway line broke through and the village was renamed for an Awabakal word meaning place of fire. The station followed in 1892, and the settlement that grew around it still runs a country market in the grounds of the Wyee Community Hall on the second Saturday of the month, with the market year starting in March.
Bargain-hunting on the second Saturday
This is a general market in the old sense, not a curated one. Fresh produce and farm eggs sit alongside plants, bric-a-brac, secondhand tools, used books, homemade soaps and candles, conserves, clothing new and used, homewares, jewellery, toys and handmade furniture. Wyee has grown steadily around that railway line, from fewer than 1,500 residents in 2001 to roughly 2,900 by 2021, and coal shaped much of the century in between: Wyee Colliery worked from 1962 to 2002 and reopened as Mannering Colliery a couple of years later. The market is the village's regular public gathering, and it draws a fair number of people down from Morisset and up from the northern Central Coast.
The family side of it is the reason a lot of people make the trip rather than shopping locally. Pony rides, a jumping castle, face painting and ice cream turn a produce run into a morning out, and the hall grounds have the space to hold all of it without the market feeling cramped. The Wyee Community Hall sits about 650 metres from Wyee railway station, close enough that the market is one of the few country markets in the Hunter you can reach on the Central Coast and Newcastle line without a car.
