Most Australian markets open early and finish by lunch. The Marina Markets do the opposite: 11am to 5pm on a Wednesday, on the wharf at the Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina in Port Douglas, with reef boats coming and going alongside the stalls.
A market that follows the season, not the calendar
The trading year is shaped by Far North Queensland's weather and by who is in town. The market runs weekly from April to October, the dry season, and returns over the Christmas school holidays. It does not run in November, February or March, which are the wettest and quietest months on this stretch of coast. Stalls lean towards things a visitor can carry home: handmade cards, clothing, jewellery and craft, rather than the produce and plants you would find at a growers' market. When a cruise ship anchors offshore, the marina market also runs to suit the tender schedule, which is a genuinely unusual thing for a market timetable to accommodate.

Port Douglas supports two quite different markets on the same street. Wharf Street's Sunday market at Market Park is the large year-round one with produce and a hundred-plus stalls; the Wednesday marina market is smaller, later and aimed squarely at people staying in town. The market's shoulder season is the opposite of most Australian markets'. It closes over the peak of the wet in February and March, and its busiest stretch is the middle of the year, when southern markets are at their quietest.

Check the month before you plan around it, because November, February and March have no market at all. An 11am to 5pm window means you can arrive after a morning on the reef, which is exactly what it is designed for. The marina is at the northern end of Wharf Street and is walkable from most of the town centre, with parking on site. Bring sun cover and water: the wharf has shade in patches but the walk between stalls does not. Bring cash as well as a card, since individual traders handle their own payments.
