Witta Market
A monthly hinterland market on the grounds of the old Witta State School, held on the third Saturday.

About this market
Witta Market has run for more than 15 years and is held on the third Saturday of each month, from 7am to noon, at 316 Witta Road. The venue is the Old Witta School Community Centre, which stands on the site of the former Witta State School, closed in 1974.
Produce, art and musicians in old school grounds
The market focuses on local produce, art, musicians and handmade items, and its stated mission is to showcase unique and local stallholders from around the Sunshine Coast. The venue sits on five acres of parkland, with aged shade trees and large open grass areas around the historic timber building, and the community centre notes ample parking.
Vendors can apply through a stallholder waitlist linked on the market's website, which points to steady demand for sites. Witta is about 7 km from Maleny in the Blackall Ranges and had a population of 1,296 at the 2021 census.

A town with two names
Witta was first settled around 1887 by German immigrant families, who called it Teutoberg, possibly after the Teutoburg Forest in Germany. The town was renamed in 1916 during the First World War. Its school opened as Maleny Provisional School in 1892, was renamed Teutoberg Provisional School in 1893, and became Witta State School in 1926 before closing on 23 August 1974. The Teutoburg Lutheran Church was built in 1893 and rebuilt as a new timber church in 1911.
The market's Facebook page posts the next date, which is handy because the third Saturday can fall on different dates from month to month. Its Facebook page has more than 5,000 followers, and its Instagram account is also active.
Witta was called Teutoberg until 1916, and its current name is a corruption of the Kabi word 'wetya', meaning dingo.
The venue is hired out for functions at other times, and its website carries a history page and a gallery, so follow the market's own pages for any change to the day.
