Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets has been running since 1995, close to three decades of the same simple pitch: set up stalls along the beach promenade three evenings a week and let the ocean do half the work. It trades Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 4pm to 9pm, rain, hail or shine, with free entry the whole time.

A market built around its view

More than 100 stalls line the promenade, covering handmade crafts, art, fashion, jewellery, photography, beauty products and home wares. What sets the atmosphere apart from an inland market is the setting: shopping with the Pacific a few metres away, street performers working the crowd, and live music running through the evening.

It leans toward tourists more than most markets in this directory, given the location right on the Gold Coast's best-known strip, but that's not a criticism so much as a description. It's built to be an easy, low-effort evening out for anyone staying nearby, not a destination locals drive across the city for.

Good to know before you go

Go on a warm, calm evening if you can; the open beachfront setting is the whole appeal and a wet night takes most of it away. Wednesday tends to be the quietest of the three trading nights if a relaxed browse matters more than the biggest crowd.
