About this market
Fitzroy Gardens is the small triangle of green where Macleay Street starts to feel residential, and on a Saturday it fills with stalls from eight in the morning. The setting does a lot of the work. Plane trees, the El Alamein fountain, and a slope of terraces and apartment blocks whose residents treat this as the week's grocery shop rather than an outing.

Bring a bag you can carry uphill on the way back, because the return leg is the one people forget. Once the market winds up at two, Macleay Street and Llankelly Place are full of places to sit down, which is the natural second half of the morning.
