About this market
Stirling Laneways is not laid out in rows. It occupies the pedestrian laneways and pockets of space that run off Mount Barker Road, activating a different combination of them for each event, so the market is discovered rather than surveyed. The laneways have names that regulars use as landmarks: Centenary Place, Tiers Loop, Acacia Alley, Organic Market Lane, Steamroller Corner, Quercus Lane and Tin Lids Lane.
More than a market, by design
The organisers say it outright, and the awards back them. Stirling Laneways won Mainstreet SA awards for Best Market or Street Activation in both 2016 and 2017 and was inducted into the Mainstreet SA Hall of Fame in 2018, and it was a Brand SA Regional Award finalist for Festivals and Events in 2015. It is an initiative of the Stirling Business Association and runs in collaboration with local businesses, performance artists and community organisations, which is why South Australian artists and entertainers are mixed in among the pop-up stalls rather than parked in a corner. The bright bunting is the practical marker: if you can see it, you are inside the event.

Most dates fall on the fourth Sunday from September through May, but a few move, and the market skips the deep summer stretch some years. Check the season list before you drive up, because the fourth-Sunday rule has exceptions in most years and there is no market in the winter months. Trading is 9am to 3pm and entry is free. Park once in the village and walk, since the whole event is spread across laneways within a couple of hundred metres of each other and there is no single entrance to aim for. Wear something for hills weather: Stirling sits high enough that a September morning and a February afternoon are genuinely different propositions. Gatherings here are held on the traditional lands of the Peramangk and Kaurna people.
