About this market

Mulgowie Markets is held on the first Saturday of every month, from 8am to 11am, in and around the Mulgowie Public Hall at 7 School Road. The Lockyer Valley tourism centre describes it as a real farmers market, with Lockyer Valley produce and a make-or-grow approach.

Produce, breakfast and a playground

Stalls are inside the air conditioned hall and outside on the grass. They offer bakery items, cakes and biscuits, local honey, olives, home-made gifts, plants and natives, pickles and relishes and books, with barista-made coffees, fresh juices and local corn for breakfast. There is live music, a playground for children, and valley views, and the market is pet-friendly.

Mulgowie had a population of just 166 at the 2021 census, yet the market's Facebook page has more than 6,500 followers. The drive is about 45 minutes from Ipswich and about an hour from Brisbane or Toowoomba.

A hall with a history

The Mulgowie Public Hall opened on Saturday 11 October 1924. It was relocated from Laidley, where it had been known as the Norman Hall, cut into two halves and taken to Mulgowie by bullock team, then re-erected by the creek. In the 2000s it was moved to its current location and extended.

The locality is named after Mount Mulgowie, whose Aboriginal name means big round hill. A railway from Laidley to Mulgowie opened on 19 April 1911 and closed in 1955. Burnside State School opened on 22 January 1877 and was renamed Mulgowie State School in 1919, closing on 12 December 1997, so the town no longer has a school. The neighbourhood of Kullee takes its name from a railway station named in 1913, from an Aboriginal word meaning fresh water. For market enquiries, email [email protected] or call 0477 143 787.
