Darlington Community Markets

Darlington State School's P&C runs this market just once a year, on a Sunday in late October, and builds the whole day around the school rather than around a standing roster of traders. Tucked into the Lost World Valley in the Scenic Rim, the market trades 8am to 12pm at the school on Kerry Road, with free entry and every dollar raised going toward sending students to camp.

A school fundraiser with a country market's worth of stalls

The stall theme is set deliberately: home grown, homemade, handmade, local, organic, upcycled and fair trade only. That rules out the resale stock you find at bigger weekly markets, and it means the mix leans toward produce, plants, crafts and baking rather than imported goods. The P&C runs its own sausage sizzle, burger stand and cake stall alongside the outside traders, and coffee and ice cream vendors set up for the morning.

The centrepiece is the Darlington Duck Race, a raffle with thousands of numbered rubber ducks tipped into the creek to race for the finish line. Tickets go on sale online ahead of the day so people who can't make the market in person can still buy in, with local businesses donating the prizes. Around the duck race the school programs live music, dance performances, line dancing, a fire brigade truck, heritage trucks and a baby animal nursery, which turns the morning into a family outing rather than a quick shop.
