DownTown Markets
A third-Sunday market in Wollundry Park at Pennant Hills, laid out across a park with concrete paths, free parking and a train station over the road.
About this market
DownTown Markets take over Wollundry Park and Gardens on the third Sunday of every month from February to December, with live music from 10:30am to 1:30pm inside a 9am to 2pm trading window. The operators describe their stallholders as emerging artists, creatives, innovators and merchants of culture, which is a mouthful, but it does describe a market that leans towards handmade and independent rather than produce.
A park layout that actually works
The venue does a lot of the work here. Wollundry Park sits directly across from Pennant Hills station and beside the library and community centre, with concrete pathways running through it, several pedestrian entry points and free all-day street parking around it. That combination is rare: most Sydney markets make you choose between an easy train trip and easy parking, and this one does both. The park layout also means picnic-style dining under sheltered seating rather than a row of stalls along a footpath, and there is space for face painting and children's play areas without them blocking anyone.
Market at a glance
Food vendors cover meals, baked goods, condiments and refreshments alongside the maker stalls. Individual dates get their own character: December brings Santa, and the June market runs a Pooch Pawrade for the dogs that come along anyway. The market also trades in all but extreme weather, so a grey Sunday is not a reason to stay home.
There is no January market. The calendar runs from the third Sunday in February through to the third Sunday in December, giving eleven dates a year rather than twelve.
Good to know before you go
Third Sunday is the rule, and February to December is the season, so a January trip to Pennant Hills will find an empty park. The train is the easiest way in: the station is over the road, and it saves working out the street parking, though the free all-day parking is genuinely there if you drive. Come between 10:30am and 1:30pm if the live music matters to you, or earlier if you would rather browse the maker stalls without the crowd. The concrete paths make this an easier market than most for prams and wheelchairs. Bring a rug if you plan to eat, since the seating is picnic-style. This is Dharug country.
