Pelican Foreshore Markets

Pelican was called Pelican Flat until 1991, and at the 2021 census it held 874 people across less than a square kilometre of land at the point where Lake Macquarie empties into the sea. The monthly market takes the best part of that: the foreshore strip on Lakeview Parade, first Saturday of the month, 9am to 1pm.

The setting is doing a lot of the work

Most markets have to make their own atmosphere. This one has the lake on one side and Swansea directly opposite across the channel, so the stalls are strung along a waterfront rather than filling a car park or a school oval. The trading mix covers fresh produce, gourmet food, handmade craft, homewares, fashion and artisan gifts, with coffee and street food vendors and live entertainment through the morning. There is face painting and a jumping castle for children, and the whole thing is set up to work with a pram or a dog on a lead. Parking is free, which on a lakeside site is not a given. The suburb it serves is tiny, under a square kilometre in total, so the market pulls its crowd from Swansea, Blacksmiths and the wider southern end of Lake Macquarie rather than from Pelican alone.

The monthly Saturday morning is the default, but it is not the only version of this market.

Good to know before you go

First Saturday, 9am to 1pm, and worth confirming the format if you are visiting between November and February when the twilight dates appear. The foreshore is exposed, so a hat in summer and a jacket in winter both earn their place. Parking is free along Lakeview Parade and the nearby streets, and the market is an easy walk from the Swansea Channel foreshore path if you want to make more of the morning.
