Bowen Community Sunday Markets

A not-for-profit Sunday market at Hansen Park beside Queens Bay, with over 50 stallholders, local produce, street food and live music.

About this market

Bowen Community Sunday Markets set up every Sunday morning at Hansen Park on Horseshoe Bay Road, among shady trees beside the shell beach at Queens Bay. Tourism listings put the stallholder count at more than 50, and the market runs from 8am to 12pm.

What is on the stalls

The market's Facebook page describes artisan stalls, fresh locally grown produce and diverse street eats, with live music every week. Tourism Whitsundays lists food cooked on site, tea and coffee, fresh fruit and vegetables, local and Balinese clothing and artifacts, fishing gear, toys, plants and jewellery. It is an all-age, dog friendly market, so a slow wander with a coffee in hand suits it better than a quick shop.

1861Town founded

Bowen began as Port Denison on 11 April 1861 and was later renamed after Sir George Bowen, the first Queensland colonial governor. Its dry climate and alluvial soil suit small crops, and Wikipedia names tomatoes, rockmelons and capsicums among them, which makes a produce table here a natural fit. The 2021 census counted 11,205 people in town, and the town's best-known roadside attraction, the Big Mango, was erected in 2002 at the Bowen Tourist Information Centre.

Good to know before you go

Tourism listings mention a carpark, public toilets and a parents room, and the Facebook page notes bus and coach parking. Dogs and other pets are welcome on leads. The market runs on a not-for-profit basis and says its funds stay in the local area, so what you spend at the stalls supports community groups and animal refuges as well as the stallholders. For stall bookings or questions, the market's Facebook page is the best first contact.

Did you know?

The market says it is not for profit and donates its funds locally, to other not-for-profit groups, charities and animal refuges.

Arrive earlier in the morning if you want the pick of the fresh fruit and vegetables, and bring cash as a backup. Stallholders are listed as selling a wide spread of goods, so it is worth a full lap of the park before you buy.
