The Junction Markets

A twice-weekly market on Oxford Street Mall in Bondi Junction, trading Thursdays and Fridays since the early 2000s.

About this market

The Junction Markets trade every Thursday and Friday from 9am to 5pm at the Newland Street end of Oxford Street Mall in Bondi Junction, an undercover street market that runs rain or shine right beside the suburb's bus and train interchange.

A market that survived a closure scare

The market traces back to the early 2000s, when it operated as the Bondi Junction Village Markets. By February 2018 it had been trading for 16 years when stallholders were given just three weeks' notice that threatened to end it, a decision that would have put more than 80 traders out of work overnight. A change.org petition pushed Waverley Council to reconsider, and the market kept its spot on Oxford Street Mall. It now trades under Blue Sky Markets, the operator behind several Sydney street markets, on the same open-air site it has held for over two decades.

What's on the stalls

Stallholders sell a mix of international food, baked goods, fresh produce, seasonal flowers, handmade jewellery, gifts and fashion, with live music running through the trading day. The market positions itself as a launch pad for small business owners and independent makers rather than a fixed lineup of the same traders every week, and stallholders are selected through an application process rather than simply signing up.

Being on Oxford Street Mall puts the market right next to the Bondi Junction Bus and Train Interchange, with Westfield Bondi Junction and Eastgate Shopping Centre both offering nearby parking for anyone driving in. The stalls run undercover, so a wet Thursday or Friday doesn't cancel a visit the way an open-air market elsewhere might.

Did you know?

In February 2018, stallholders were given just three weeks' notice that could have ended a market already 16 years old at the time. A change.org petition pushed Waverley Council to reconsider, and the market has kept trading on the same Oxford Street Mall site ever since.

Oxford Street Mall's market culture has grown beyond this one fixture too: a separate evening event, the Bondi Junction Twilight Markets, launched nearby in September 2026 on the last Thursday of each month, turning the mall into an after-dark market on top of the regular trade. The Junction Markets itself keeps to its original daytime slot and its original mall-side corner of Bondi Junction.
